Stefano Zanchetta graduated in Geological Sciences in 2002 in Milano. He got his Ph.D. in Petrology in 2006, working on the reconstruction of the tectonometamorphic evolution of high-pressure rocks of the Austroalpine units of the Eastern Alps.
During the postdoctoral research activities his research interests shifted to field mapping and structural geology. He focused his research on the reconstruction of the evolution of structurally complex orogenic belt in several areas of the world, mainly in Asia (Pamir and Iran) and in the European Alps, dealing both with structures developed at upper and lower crustal levels. He participated in several national and international projects (MEBE, DARIUS).
His current research interests are the Permian tectonic and magmatic activities in the Southern Alps and their structural evolution, the evolution of orogenic peridotites and their chemical and mechanical interaction with the hosting crustal rocks, and the study of crustal-scale shear zones in different tectonic contexts.
He is working since the 2002 in the CARG Italian National project with the Bozen Autonomous Province (Geological maps at 1:50.000) as mapping geologist and scientific consultant.
He is Associate Professor of Structural Geology at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Milano Bicocca. He published about 30 papers and geological maps in international scientific journals.
