Alexis Plunder is a geologist at the French Geological Survey (BRGM). His main research topic are about the evolution of burial and exhumation in orogenic belts, the behavior of critical metals or resources during orogeny.
His field expertise includes the Western Alps, the French Massif Central, the West Indies, Western Anatolia, Oman, the Andaman Island, and the Jebilet of Morocco.
He got a PhD from École Normale Supérieure in Paris with focus on metamorphic petrology of high-pressure rocks and the long terms dynamics of a subduction zone. Then he focused his research about subduction initiation and the thermal regime of subduction zone using both a field based approach and a numerical modelling approach. He is the co-author of more than 30 publications in international journals and has contributed to 4 maps published by the BRGM or the CGMW (Malawi, Chad, Paleotectonic of the Tethyan realm). He has been teaching at École Normale Supérieure and Sorbonne Université in Paris including fieldwork and geological mapping. He participated in the supervision of over 15 PhD, MsC and BsC students on various topics. He currently leads the Alps and peripheral basin project of the "Référentiel Géologique de la France" program held at the BRGM, that focuses on the production of a 1/50000 scale map of the French Alps that includes the current geological knowledge.
