Associate Professor in Structural Geology at the Department of Earth Sciences, Environment and Resources – Federico II University of Naples.
Dr. Tavani undertook a five-year Master's degree in Geology at the Roma Tre University in 2000. Subsequently, between 2001 and 2004, he undertook a PhD in Geodynamics in the same university, with a research about 3D relationships between fracture pattern development and thrust-related folding in contractional settings. In 2005, he took up a two-year post doctoral position in the Roma Tre University and then, from August 2007 to December 2011, he worked at Barcelona University, with a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Geodynamics and Geophysics. Dr. Tavani joined the Naples University in 2011, first as Assistant Professor, and since 2015 as Associate Professor.
His research expertise is on structural geology, tectonics, geodynamics. In particular, his researches mostly focus on the following aspects: Evolution of the external sectors of orogenic systems. Development and inversion of passive margins. Reverse and strike-slip reactivation of inherited structures. Interactions between tectonics and sedimentation. Nucleation and development of fault-related folds, in both compressional and extensional settings. Quantitative analysis of mesoscale deformation structures. Development of software for structural data analysis. Construction of balanced cross sections and their validation throughout the incorporation of mesostructural data. Techniques for the 3D reconstruction of geological structures. Study of analogues for fractured reservoirs.
Keywords: thrust tectonics, fractures, field mapping, extensional basins
