Letizia Vita graduated in Geological Sciences at The Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) in 1985, discussing a thesis in Volcanology and Petrology on silicate melt structures of Tyrrhenian area obsidians. After a brief experience as a research fellow in Experimental Petrology at the National Research Council (CNR), she started her career at the Geological Survey of Italy (now a Department of the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research - ISPRA) in 1989.
She is working for the Geological Survey of Italy on the Italian Geological Mapping Project at 1:50,000 scale (CARG Project) since 1989 as geologist expert on mapping of volcanic areas and geological surveys. As part of this activity, she worked as a reviewer of numerous geological sheets of the Phase 1 of the CARG Project.
She participated in monitoring and testing the implementation of the CARG Project guidelines about geological mapping in volcanic areas. Recently, she coordinated the update of the CARG Project guidelines currently adopted in the new phase of the Project.
She participated in the geological mapping of geological sheets at 1:50,000 scale no. 355 - Ronciglione, no. 345 -Viterbo, no. 337 – Norcia. She is now in charge of surveying the geological sheet no. 626 – Torretta Granitola – Pantelleria. Moreover, she is currently the Project Coordinator for the Geological Survey of Italy of the sheets no. 124 – Verona Est, no. 125 – Vicenza, no. 320 – Castel del Piano, no. 417 – Teano, no. 626 – Torretta Granitola - Pantelleria.
Furthermore, she is part of the working group "Geological Events and Probabilities" on WP6 of the European Geology Project "Emodnet". In the framework of this project she participated in the publication of the "ATLAS of Italian Submarine Volcanic Structures" and is collaborating on a structural map of the seafloor surrounding Italy at 1:1,250,000 scale.
