Gianluca Vignaroli is an Associate Professor in Structural Geology at the Università degli Studi di Bologna, Dipartimento di Scienze Biologiche, Geologiche e Ambientali. His research primarily focuses on the structural characterisation of polydeformed orogenic belts, both ancient and active. He specializes in analysing the styles and regimes of progressive deformation affecting orogens in their hinterland, axial zones, and foreland domains. His work also includes characterising complex, long-lived fault zones that record multiphase activity. His study areas encompass various parts of the Alpine-Himalayan range (Western and Eastern Alps, Apennines and Calabrian Arc, Betics, Iranian range), as well as Antarctica and Oman.
More recently, he has investigated case studies of fluid-rock interaction modulated by the seismic cycle and active tectonics in foreland fold-thrust belts. He also contributed to the 1:50,000 scale "Norcia" Geological Sheet (CARG Project).
His core research skills and expertise lie in structural geology, field geology, and petrography/petrology. His research spans from regional geology to microstructural analysis.

He teaches Field Geology to BSc students and an advanced Structural Geology course to MSc students. He regularly supervises PhD and Master's students in Structural Geology. He has authored or co-authored over 70 publications in high-impact scientific journals.
